What is the Byron Nelson Cup?

The Byron Nelson Cup is a season-long competition in which Senior GGA members may accumulate points in each Cup-eligible tournament based upon their net finish against all other Byron Nelson Cup participants. At the conclusion of the Senior GGA Championship, the top 32 Cup point earners and alternates will compete for the Byron Nelson Cup and cash prizes.

How does it work?

The Byron Nelson Cup competition is an optional season-long event. To participate, GGA Senior members must pay a separate, one-time, annual $31 entry fee any time prior to the GGA Senior Championship.

Initial sign up and entry for the Nelson Cup must occur by the tournament cutoff date in order to have that tournament count. Only GGA Senior Cup-eligible tournament scores posted after signing up for the Byron Nelson Cup competition will earn Cup Points.

At the conclusion of each Cup Tournament, all Cup participants will earn Cup Points based on their net finish against all Cup participants. By utilizing net scores throughout the season and in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals, the competition can be fairly scored across all flights.

After each Cup Tournament, Cup Points earned in that tournament and year-to-date Cup Point standings will be posted on the GGA website along with other tournament results.

At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, the top 32 Cup Point earners from the season will have an opportunity to compete in the two-day Byron Nelson Cup Finals for the Byron Nelson Cup and cash prizes. There will be a $26 entry fee to compete in the finals.

You cannot win the Byron Nelson Cup or prize money if you do not play in the Cup Finals, are disqualified, or withdraw from the Cup Finals.

Can I compete in both cup events?

Yes. Any GGA Senior member may compete in both the Byron Nelson Cup and the Grapevine Cup by signing up and paying separate fees. Points earned in monthly GGA Senior events only earn Byron Nelson Cup points. Points earned in regular GGA events only earn Grapevine Cup points.

Eligibility and included tournaments

Any GGA member who is 55 years of age or older is eligible to participate in the Byron Nelson Cup.

Each tournament on the current GGA Senior Tournament schedule is a Cup Point earning event, with the exception of the May 2 Person 6/6/6 Tournament. Cup Points are not available for Match Play tournaments.

The 80 lowest net-score Cup participants will earn points based upon their net finish against other Cup participants. The competition uses 100% of each Cup participant's handicap for calculating net finishes.

GGA Senior Championship

These Cup Points are awarded to players competing in both days of the GGA Senior Championship. The Saturday event will also be counted as a normal monthly Cup Tournament, so players have the opportunity to win Cup Points twice if they place both days.

Monthly standings

At the conclusion of each Nelson Cup Tournament, a year-to-date list of Cup Point earnings for each participating member will be posted to the GGA website. At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, final Byron Nelson Cup point standings will be produced, and the 32 highest Cup Point earners and alternates will be eligible for the finals.

Regular tournament payouts

The Byron Nelson Cup is a separate, yearlong competition for members who choose to participate. It does not affect how payouts are structured for regular Senior or GGA tournaments.

Why net scores?

Nelson Cup participants compete against all other Nelson Cup participants in each Cup Tournament. Using net scores creates an equal opportunity for every participant to earn a spot in the finals.

How many events must I play?

You may compete in as many or as few Cup Tournaments as you wish. Participation is optional. Once a player declares and pays the $31 entry fee, he can play in as many Nelson Cup Tournaments as he wishes.

The more tournaments played, the better the chance to earn Cup Points and qualify for the top 32. The four-tournament requirement to participate in the GGA Senior Championship still applies.

Finals format

The Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be a two-day, individual stroke play event using net scores to determine the Byron Nelson Cup Champion. Each qualifier and alternate who plays will pay a $26 entry fee.

The finals participant whose total of year-to-date Nelson Cup Points and Cup Points won in the finals is highest will be declared the Byron Nelson Cup Champion and win the first-place prize. The same formula determines the remaining prize positions through the top 16 plus ties.

Ties, schedule, and prize fund

Ties for positions during Byron Nelson Cup Tournaments and through the finals will be settled using the same tie-breaker steps used by the Handicap Chairman in GGA Senior monthly tournaments.

The Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be a two-day tournament played at the end of each tournament year. Dates will be listed on the Senior Tournament Schedule for each year.

All prizes awarded after the conclusion of the finals will be cash. The total prize fund depends on the number of entrants plus finals entry fees. The top 16 Byron Nelson Finals points finishers plus ties will earn a payout from this fund.

Flights, tees, and handicaps

There is no set number of finalists from any flight. Each player competes for Cup Points against all other participants on a net basis. At the conclusion of the GGA Senior Championship, the top 32 and ties qualify for the finals.

Byron Nelson Cup finalists will compete from the White Tees.

Scores posted in the Byron Nelson Cup Finals will be recorded and posted to the GGA website. Those scores will be used in the normal handicap determination process.

Hole-in-one prize fund

The Byron Nelson Cup Finals are defined as an extra GGA event, so hole-in-ones made during the finals are not eligible for the hole-in-one prize fund. Per the GGA by-laws, extra events such as the Away Tournament, Grapevine Cup Finals, Byron Nelson Cup Finals, and Match Play Tournaments are not eligible for the hole-in-one prize fund.

Unexpected situations

The GGA Officers and Board will review and make decisions on unexpected happenings and situations not covered in this document. Their decision will be final.

We look forward to your participation in the Byron Nelson Cup competition.
